BHSL's new Top Loader stores, moves and dispenses up to 150 tonnes of biomass or other agricultural and waste products per day. It is driven by two 2.2kW motors, which operate via a programmable logic controller (PLC) using BHSL proprietary software.
Compared with moving floors and walking floors, the Top Loader is extremely energy efficient. With energy savings of up to 60% and simplified maintenance due to moving parts being located overhead, the Top Loader offers cost savings of up to 40%... [more]
Under the EU Landfill Directive the UK is committed to reducing Biodegradable Municipal Waste (BMW) sent to landfill. This requires reductions against 1995 tonnages of 35% by 2010, 50% by 2013, and 65% by 2020.
According to the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), pressure on local authorities to recycle more to avoid exceeding their landfill allowance is creating the risk of a ‘quantity not quality’ approach to processing waste. This could result in recycled material such as paper, glass an... [more]
Verso Paper Corp. has announced the launch of a $40 million Renewable Energy Project at its Bucksport, Maine mill. This project will provide a 43% increase in thermal energy production from renewable biomass at the Bucksport Mill and will generate additional green power – equivalent to the amount needed to supply electricity to 30,000 Maine households.
The Bucksport Mill will achieve these energy efficiency improvements by replacing coal with biomass in the #8 Boiler and installing a new 25-m... [more]
Every year, the average UK household disposes of more than 21 batteries as part of their general waste. This translates to over 22 tonnes of waste batteries sent to landfill annually. With experts predicting that the UK will run out of landfill space in the next few years, increasing battery recycling rates is a crucial way of trying to reverse this trend.
The Mall Luton is to trial an end-of-life battery recycling scheme for shoppers. Teaming up with battery manufacturer Varta and recycling ... [more]
Landfill of scrap tyres was prohibited in 2003 and landfill of shredded rubber was prohibited in 2006. Since that time the recycling industry has struggled to come up with an environmentally friendly solution to tyre recycling. Until the advent of the BSI standard bale, some scrap tyres would be stripped of their rubber which would be turned into chips for horse gallops, children’s play areas and weed suppressant products. Others were shipped overseas to become retreads for the Third World.
