Fee recycling in Mid Devon schools encourages youngsters to recycle
Mid Devon District Council has re-introduced free recycling to more than 40 Mid Devon schools. Schools within the area are now provided with up to six recycling boxes to collect at least two materials, including paper.
The running costs of the scheme have been offset by recycling credits and the sale of recovered materials, whilst start-up costs, such as the recycling containers, have been sponsored by paper reprocessor, Aylesford Newsprint.
Aylesford Newsprint is funding the school recycling boxes via its quality bonus fund. The quality bonus fund seeks to reward suppliers, such as Mid Devon District Council, which consistently provide high quality recovered newspapers and magazines with low levels of contamination. By working with local authorities to ensure the quality of the recovered paper Aylesford can in turn provide the standard of newsprint required by newspaper publishing houses throughout Europe.
Dave Moore, Aylesford Newsprint Recycling Area Manager, said: “We really like this schools project in Mid Devon; it encourages youngsters to recycle and gets them into the habit early. It is important to Aylesford Newsprint to encourage good recycling practices as it has a positive impact on the entire recycling process. The quality bonus fund not only rewards our better suppliers, such as Mid Devon District Council, but also rewards local communities.”
The Aylesford Newsprint Bonus Fund is available to all of the mill’s contracted suppliers and accrues with each high quality delivery made. It can be requested at any time to support community recycling projects.
Simon Hill, Waste Strategy & Recycling Officer, Mid Devon District Council, said: “The reintroduction of recycling to Mid Devon Schools is a great way to boost the area’s recycling, as well as educate the next generation of recyclers. Having our high standards recognised by Aylesford Newsprint’s Quality Bonus Fund shows that recycling really does pay. Already, the scheme has received a good response and is producing clean well sorted recyclables.”
The paper collected in Mid Devon’s school recycling boxes will be delivered to Aylesford’s Kent-based mill where it will be reprocessed into 100 percent recycled newsprint.
