The City and County of Swansea has renewed its contract with Aylesford Newsprint ensuring that the area’s recovered paper will continue to be recycled into quality newsprint for use in some of Europe’s top publishing houses.

In the last five years Aylesford Newsprint has reprocessed more than 40,000 tonnes of the County’s paper collected via kerbside collections and bring banks. The new contract will divert approximately 8,000 tonnes of paper per year from landfill. Once collected, the paper will be transported to Aylesford’s Kent-based mill where it will be reprocessed into quality newsprint suitable for regional and national press centres.

Reena Owen, Environment Director, Swansea Council said: “We are pleased to continue our long and successful relationship with Aylesford Newsprint. The City and County of Swansea is keen to embrace partnerships, such as this one, which are environmentally and commercially sustainable.”

Some 7,000 tonnes of paper comes from the area’s kerbside collections, with the remaining 1,000 tonnes coming from bring banks and commercial waste activities. Swansea’s kerbside collections are source segregated which results in lower contamination levels. This has a positive impact on the production process.

Commenting on the new contract, Aylesford Newsprint’s Area Manager Dave Moore said: “The high quality of paper collected from residents and businesses in Swansea illustrates their dedication to the environment and sustainability. The partnership between the City and County of Swansea and Aylesford Newsprint is underpinned by their excellent understanding of the recycling process. We are pleased to continue to support the County with its commitment to improving recycling rates.”

Aylesford Newsprint manufactures 100% recycled newsprint and is one of the UK’s leading reprocessors of recovered paper. The company is responsible for the recycling of one in seven of every newspapers currently bought in the UK.
